2009 Award: It is better to spot maternal vulnerabilities during pregnancy

Psychiatrist Valérie GAREZ works as assistant specialist doctor at the prenatal psychiatric mobile unit (PPUMMA) of the Hauts-de-Seine area.

She has noticed that most of the mothers who approach PPUMMA at the time of childbirth or post-partum have a psychiatric history and/or have already taken psychoactive drugs. The research, which will be carried out with the maternity units belonging to the network, thus aims at determining whether it would have been possible for maternity unit professionals to provide these women with early care and what are the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of women showing signs of mental vulnerability.

It will also enable raising the awareness of the maternity unit teams in taking account of the psychological environment from childbirth and thereafter, in order to improve the support given to these (future) mothers before and after the birth.
